A Safe Station
on the Underground Railroad
Built in 1850 by George and
Sarah Gammon, the Gammon House offered rest and hiding for people of color
traveling north to freedom from Slavery. The Gammon House helps make the
stories personal, giving a local point of interest to the often overlooked
aspect of blacks helping blacks on the Underground Railroad. Our goal is to
fully restore this magnificent testament of American history, making it an
educational center to tell the stories of the people who both operated the
Underground Railroad and those who risked their lives fleeing from slavery
and injustice.
